Herb of the Month: Chicory Root

Herb of the Month: Chicory Root

Chicory root is probably best known for its properties as a coffee substitute.

Yeah, that's right.

Most people make their own coffee substitutes using the root of the beautiful blue flower, Chicory. When roasted, chicory root takes an acidic taste that really reminds you of coffee. It is really amazing stuff when you think about it. Not only does chicory root have an acidic taste similar to coffee, it also kind of smells and tastes like coffee.

Way back in the day, you know before we got refined sugar and Snickers? Anyway, way back in the day, when people wanted energy, they would chew on the root of a plant for its sugar content. So, that would be dandelion root, burdock root, chicory root, and more. But with technology and agricultural advances, things have changed - we do no longer rely on roots for their sugars, so that we can get that boost of energy.

That does not mean these roots are not beneficial, though.

I have been drinking a cup of Not Coffee Vol. 3, our chicory root tea, every single day. Not Coffee Vol. 3 is our all-natural coffee substitute made of roasted chicory root.

Chicory root has inulin, a prebiotic fiber, and that is what makes it my go to herbal tea as of late. It is so important to me that I get prebiotics in my diet because they feed the good (or helpful) bacteria in your gut. Those helpful bacteria reduce inflammation, tell the bad bacteria to pack it up, and help your body absorb much needed minerals from the other things you eat and drink throughout the day.

Some studies show that inulin can even help control blood sugar, particularly if you have diabetes. And it is just so easy to get this really beneficial herb into your diet.

Just a quick warning: Chicory is generally safe, but it can cause gas and bloating in some people. Just watch yourself and be careful. Remember - I am not a doctor. I make no claims to be. Always talk to your doctor before you begin any herbal regimen.

Chicory root and all of its awesome medicinal properties makes it way into some of our most popular teas. Try them and make your gut happy.
